While not every scientist needs to be a rock star communicator, communication skills may be more valuable than they realize. Surveys of scientists who have received communication training shows they tend to feel more confident networking with other scientists, as well as giving and receiving feedback. And scientists have reported other unexpected benefits to improving their communication skills, according to Katie Moisse, Associate Director (Curriculum & Pedagogy) with McMaster University’s School of Interdisciplinary Science.

One person in particular told me she’s become a more successful scientist as a result of practising these skills because she’s just better at showing — through her grant writing  — the potential of the science,” Moisse said. “So I think there are perks, certainly, to learning these skills.”
